Meet the Seven UMass Amherst Startups Competing for $65,000 in Seed Money

Seven student-run startups at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst will have the chance to compete for $65,000 in seed money in the final round of the four-part innovation challenge hosted by the Berthiaume Center for Entrepreneurship.

Twelve student-led teams in the semi-finals of the competition on March 2 made five-minute pitches, describing their ventures and participating in a 10-minute question and answer session. The judges then selected seven of those teams to move on to the finals on April 2.

The competition first begins with the minute pitch competition, where teams are given 60 seconds to present ideas to judges – with no written business models or plans – and receive feedback. The judges award $2,500 in seed money to four teams, the top three finishers and the audience choice winner. The competition continues when teams present again with actual business models and a more polished elevator pitch. In this round, judges award $15,000 in seed money to select teams. Then the semi-finals determine the finalists and one winner in the finals wins the $65,000 prize. Meet the finalists:
